A payment card is missing: report it before debating whether it was stolen

A missing debit or credit card may be at home, left at a shop or taken. Waiting to know exactly what happened can give an unauthorized user time to spend. Issuers can block or replace a card, and applicable liability rules may depend on prompt reporting, especially for debit accounts.

Before you start

Use the bank's official app or the issuer number from a statement. If the missing card was your only proof of its number, do not look up help in an ad or text.

Do it step by step

  1. Check recent transactions quickly and note anything you do not recognize. If the app offers a reversible card lock, use it while contacting the issuer.
  2. Report the missing card to the issuer as soon as possible. Ask whether it should be cancelled, reissued and linked digital-wallet tokens removed.
  3. Dispute any unauthorized transaction through the issuer's process, recording amount, merchant, date and your report reference.
  4. Update legitimate subscriptions after replacement, but only through the vendors' official accounts. Watch the old and new account activity for further charges.
  5. If a wallet or identity document disappeared with the card, address those separately; a card replacement does not protect a lost driver's licence or phone.

Check the result

The issuer should confirm the old card's status, replacement plan and the outcome or case number for each suspicious charge.

If something goes wrong

A merchant name may be unfamiliar for a legitimate purchase. Ask the issuer to help identify it, but do not delay reporting a truly missing card while researching every transaction.

Know the limit

U.S. credit and debit liability protections differ, and other jurisdictions have different deadlines. This guide is operational, not a promise of reimbursement; ask your issuer about local rules immediately. FTC lost-card reporting guidance
