A seller asks for PayPal Friends and Family: choose the payment type safely

When buying from a stranger, the seller may say that Friends and Family avoids a fee, speeds shipping or is required for a discount. PayPal describes personal payments as exchanges with people you know, while goods-and-services payments are for purchases. Its US help says personal payments are outside Purchase Protection and eligible goods-and-services purchases may qualify. Terms differ by country and product, so read the local protection policy before paying rather than relying on a seller's promise.

Before you start

Confirm what you are purchasing, the seller's identity, total price, delivery method and refund terms outside a chat that the seller alone controls. Keep the listing and conversation. If the item is scarce or the seller creates urgency, slow down; a screenshot of a PayPal account or a claimed receipt is not proof of delivery or legitimacy.

Do it step by step

  1. Start from PayPal's official checkout or a verified merchant page. Read the payee address or business name and the full amount before authorizing; a typo can send money to the wrong recipient.
  2. If you are paying for an item or service, choose the goods-and-services or purchase option offered for your region. Do not switch to a personal payment merely because the seller asks you to absorb their fee.
  3. Check the current local Buyer or Purchase Protection conditions for the item category and delivery method. Some transactions are excluded. A protected payment type improves your dispute path but is not insurance against every loss.
  4. If the seller refuses the appropriate payment type, request another reputable marketplace checkout with clear buyer terms or stop the deal. Do not send a second payment outside the platform as a supposed release or verification fee.
  5. Save the transaction ID, listing, messages, promised delivery date and shipping information after paying. Keep them in a secure place independent of the seller's account, which might later disappear.
  6. If the item never arrives or materially differs from its description, use the completed payment in PayPal Activity and choose the truthful purchase-issue reason within the applicable deadline. Communicate in the Resolution Center when requested.

Check the result

The transaction is classified as a purchase, the payee and amount are correct, and you understand whether local protection terms apply to that exact item. The evidence needed for a later dispute is retained.

If something goes wrong

If the interface does not offer goods-and-services payment for this route, do not assume a personal transfer can be fixed afterward. Ask PayPal through its official help or use a different protected checkout. If the seller claims fees are impossible, treat that as the seller's commercial decision, not a reason to mislabel the payment.

Know the limit

PayPal protection depends on eligibility, jurisdiction, deadlines and evidence. Using goods and services does not guarantee a refund. A personal transfer to a stranger for a purchase changes the risk and may leave no purchase-protection route. Do not misreport a transaction as unauthorized when you deliberately sent it.
