A website can still use your camera in Firefox: review its permission

A site you used for a call may retain an Allow decision for camera or microphone. That does not necessarily mean it is recording in the background, but the stored grant deserves review when you no longer trust the site or have switched services. Firefox exposes both site-level controls and broader permissions settings.

Before you start​

Use the exact domain you intend to change. Close sensitive tabs and check whether the operating system also grants camera access to Firefox.

Do it step by step​

1. Open the site directly and inspect the Permissions icon near the address bar if one appears. Review camera and microphone entries separately.
2. Remove the saved Allow choice for a permission you no longer want. A cleared entry should return to the default ask behavior when the site requests access again.
3. For a fuller audit, open Page Info or Firefox Settings, Privacy & Security, Permissions, and inspect the Camera and Microphone site lists.
4. Test a legitimate call on a site you still use; allow access only when it asks and confirm the browser's active-use indicator behaves as expected.
5. If a site accessed your camera unexpectedly, also review installed extensions, system-level privacy permissions and the site account's recent activity.

Check the result​

The questionable domain should no longer show a persistent Allow grant. The next access attempt should need your decision, unless another browser or system policy overrides it.

If something goes wrong​

Firefox may hide the address-bar Permissions icon when no custom permission is stored. Use Page Info or Settings instead of assuming the absence of an icon proves safety.

Know the limit​
