What it means
After fraud, resetting a password and revoking sessions can stop further account access. Recovering a bank transfer, card charge, gift-card payment or cryptocurrency has different mechanisms and time constraints. A scammer can use one stolen account to cause several payment events.
A real-world example
A person changes an email password after a fake support call but forgets to report a bank transfer made during the same call.
What to do
List each exposed account, device and payment. Secure credentials from a trusted device, contact the relevant payment provider immediately and preserve transaction evidence.
The distinction that matters
Neither a successful password reset nor a police report guarantees reimbursement. Be wary of anyone who unexpectedly offers to recover lost funds for an upfront fee; the FTC warns about secondary recovery scams. Make each report through a channel you find independently, and keep the case reference for follow-up.
