Add a second Apple trusted phone number

If your only trusted Apple device and only trusted phone number are on the same lost iPhone, receiving a sign-in code can become difficult. A second trusted number that you control independently can make recovery more resilient.

Before you start​

Choose a number you can actually access when your primary iPhone is missing, such as a separate phone line or a trusted family member's number with their consent. Explain to that person what an Apple verification code means.

Do it step by step​

1. On a signed-in iPhone open Settings → [your name] → Sign-In & Security → Two-Factor Authentication. Review the listed trusted phone numbers and devices.
2. Choose Add Trusted Phone Number and enter the independent number. Complete Apple's confirmation process using the phone that receives the code.
3. Check that the number appears in the trusted list. Do not remove the original until the new one is verified and reachable.
4. Write down how you would access the second number after a theft, and check your account recovery contact or key separately. A trusted number and recovery contact solve different problems.
5. Revisit the list after changing carriers, moving country or losing access to a family member's line. Remove obsolete numbers promptly to avoid codes going somewhere unintended.

Check the result​

Both numbers should appear in Apple Account settings and the second line should be able to receive a test verification during a normal sign-in when appropriate.

If something goes wrong​

If the number cannot receive codes, check country code and carrier delivery before relying on it. If you already lost access to every listed number, use Apple's official account-recovery process.

Know the limit​
