What it means
Advanced Data Protection is an optional iCloud setting that extends end-to-end encryption to most iCloud data categories, including backups, photos and notes. The encryption keys for protected categories stay with trusted devices rather than being available to Apple for ordinary account recovery.
A real-world example
A family member loses all trusted devices and forgets the account password. With this feature enabled, a functioning recovery contact or recovery key becomes critical; Apple cannot simply decrypt the protected backup on request.
What to do
Before enabling it, update devices, review trusted-device access and establish a tested recovery plan. Keep an independent copy of irreplaceable files; encryption does not protect against deletion.
The distinction that matters
It does not make every iCloud feature end-to-end encrypted or prevent someone from accessing data after taking over an unlocked trusted device. Apple's guide describes the protected categories and recovery responsibility.
