An Office spreadsheet says macros are blocked: handle the warning

A macro-enabled workbook can run automation, but it can also execute harmful instructions. Current Office protections commonly block macros in files marked as coming from the internet. A colleague's request to unblock a workbook is not enough on its own to prove that code is safe.

Before you start​

Record where the workbook came from, who maintains its macro and what the macro is meant to do. Back up the original and use your organization's approved review channel.

Do it step by step​

1. Leave macros blocked while checking the sender and business purpose through an independent contact. Do not use a downloaded workaround to make the banner disappear.
2. Check the file's actual extension and whether it truly needs a macro. Ask for a non-macro export when the task only requires reading data.
3. If automation is necessary, have the workbook owner or IT review its origin, code-signing approach and distribution method under local policy.
4. Follow the approved internal path to obtain and run a trusted copy. Do not globally relax Office macro policy or put arbitrary downloads into a trusted location.
5. If you previously enabled a suspicious macro, disconnect only as your incident process directs, report the file and review account or endpoint alerts with IT.

Check the result​

A legitimate workflow should identify the macro owner, expected behavior and approved distribution route. Repeated unexplained blocks are a reason to fix distribution, not to teach everyone to bypass a warning.

If something goes wrong​

A blocked macro does not mean every cell is malicious; it means active code from that origin is not trusted. Conversely, an unblocked workbook is not proof of safety.
