An unexpected WhatsApp registration code arrived. What now?

A code you did not request can mean someone entered your number by mistake or is trying to register it on another phone. The code alone does not mean they succeeded. Do not forward it to a friend, caller or supposed support agent.

Check your account​

1. If WhatsApp still opens normally, ignore the unsolicited code. Check Settings → Linked devices for sessions you do not recognize and log those out.
2. Turn on two-step verification and add a recovery email you control. Keep your phone and email accounts protected too.
3. If WhatsApp says your number was registered on another phone, follow WhatsApp's official account-recovery instructions from its app or Help Center. Alert close contacts if someone sent messages pretending to be you.

Avoid the second trick​

An attacker may claim they sent their own code to your number accidentally and ask you to read it back. That code is for your account. WhatsApp's registration and two-step verification guidance explains the control. If your mobile service suddenly stops working too, contact your carrier through its official channel; that can indicate a separate phone-number takeover attempt.

If you lose access​

Try to register your number again through the official WhatsApp app and follow its recovery prompts. Tell contacts not to trust unusual money or code requests from your account. Check the carrier account too if calls and texts stop arriving; restoring WhatsApp alone will not fix a phone-number transfer.
