What it means
Identity Check adds biometric verification to selected sensitive operations on supported Android phones when away from trusted places. A trusted place is a saved approximate location shared with features such as Extend Unlock. It is not a biometric factor, an exact geofence or proof that only the owner is present. Google says the estimated boundary can extend roughly 100 meters and location signals can be manipulated.
A real-world example
A phone is near a saved office in a street-level café. It may be considered within the trusted area even though a stranger could observe the PIN. The owner should not treat that location as a secure room.
What to do
Keep trusted places few and current, enable Identity Check if supported, and test a harmless protected setting away from them. Change the PIN if somebody may have learned it.
The distinction that matters
A missing Identity Check control means the phone may not support it; a saved trusted place does not create the feature. Extend Unlock and Identity Check can use the same place list for different decisions. Always keep the base screen lock strong. If you move house, remove the old address rather than letting a former home remain treated as familiar, and test the changed behavior outside every saved location.
