What it means
An Apple Account recovery contact is a trusted person nominated in advance to help with account recovery. The arrangement is not routine access to photos, mail or messages. Apple also uses the route for protected iCloud data recovery when Advanced Data Protection is enabled.
A real-world example
You lose your phone and cannot receive a normal verification prompt. A contact who previously accepted the role may help complete Apple's recovery process. A stranger who simply calls claiming to be Apple support is not your recovery contact.
What to do
Choose and confirm a reachable person in Settings → [your name] → Sign-In & Security → Recovery Contacts. Agree how to verify an unexpected request by calling a known number.
The distinction that matters
A contact cannot replace every missing credential or rescue an account if the arrangement was never completed. They should never ask you to send a password or verification code outside the official recovery flow; that would be a separate warning sign.
