Audit a voice assistant's stored recordings and connected accounts

A smart speaker may mishear a wake word, retain voice interactions or connect to calendars, contacts and shopping accounts. Deleting recordings from the vendor account and using a physical mute control solve different problems: one removes retained history under the vendor's policy, the other limits new listening while engaged.

Before you start

Use the official assistant app and know which household members share the device. Consider whether voice purchasing or personal-result features are necessary.

Do it step by step

  1. Open the assistant app's privacy or activity controls and review what voice history is stored and for how long.
  2. Delete unwanted history and set a shorter automatic retention period if available. Read the vendor's policy on human review and opt out where supported.
  3. Inspect linked services, calendars, contacts and shopping permissions. Disconnect integrations no longer needed and restrict purchasing controls.
  4. For a confidential conversation, use a physical microphone mute switch when available and confirm its indicator shows the muted state.
  5. Secure the controlling account with a unique password and two-factor authentication. Test an ordinary voice command afterward to ensure the intended household functions still work.

Check the result

The activity page should show the chosen retention setting and fewer connected accounts. The physical mute indicator should reflect the state you selected.

If something goes wrong

Vendors name these settings differently and may retain limited records under their published policy. Review the actual account rather than relying on a generic voice command to delete everything.

Know the limit

Deleting server-side history cannot retract material already exported or heard by another person. A software mute icon and a hardware microphone switch may offer different assurances. FTC voice-assistant privacy guidance
