Audit public Google Maps reviews and photos tied to your profile

Google says Maps reviews, ratings and photos are public contributions; they cannot be posted privately in the ordinary review flow. Your name, profile photo, other contributions and sometimes location information on media can be discoverable through a place page. Restricting profile discoverability can limit how easily people find the collection, but it does not turn each review or photo into private content. Audit the actual posts before assuming a profile switch solves an unwanted exposure.

Before you start​

Use the Google Account that made the contributions. Think about sensitive workplaces, home-adjacent venues, health locations or photos containing people and documents. If a photo is also in Google Photos or on your phone, remember deleting its Maps copy is a separate action. Save any text you need before deleting a review, and avoid sharing another person's private details in a new edit.

Do it step by step​

1. Open Google Maps, profile picture, Your profile or Contribute. Review public reviews, ratings, photos and published lists as another person might see them.
2. For a review that reveals too much, choose its menu and Edit Review or Delete Review. Verify the place and text before confirming, especially when venues share names.
3. For a photo or video you uploaded, open your contributions, Photos, select the item and delete the Maps contribution if appropriate. Google notes that this does not automatically remove the copy in your phone gallery, Google Photos or Drive.
4. Inspect location information and visible people in remaining media. Remove a contribution that unintentionally identifies a home, route or person rather than assuming a restricted profile hides the image at its place page.
5. Review Maps profile settings, including the restricted-profile control where available. Then test from another account or a signed-out view to understand the difference between profile discovery and public place content.
6. Revisit after a few minutes because removals can take time to appear. If someone else posted a harmful photo or review, use Google's Report a problem route; you cannot delete another person's upload from your account.

Check the result​

Unwanted contributions are edited or removed from their place pages, remaining content is intentional, and the account owner can explain what the restricted-profile setting does and does not hide.

If something goes wrong​

If a photo remains in Google Photos, remove or secure that copy separately if desired. If a Maps deletion seems delayed, reopen Your contributions after some time. For someone else's media, use the report process with evidence instead of trying to edit a file you do not own.

Know the limit​

A profile visibility control cannot convert a Maps review into a private diary entry. Copies or screenshots made before deletion may persist, and search results can update later. Google may use contribution metadata across services under its policy, so avoid publishing sensitive details in the first place.
