What the key does
A
BitLocker recovery key can unlock an encrypted Windows drive when ordinary startup cannot verify the device state. It is different from your Windows password or PIN. Device Encryption may have saved a key to a Microsoft account or an organization's account when protection was enabled.
An example
After a hardware or security change, Windows shows a recovery screen. The screen displays a key ID; match its first eight digits with the correct key in your account before entering anything. Microsoft's
recovery guide lists possible locations and says support cannot recreate a lost key.
Prepare now
Confirm the key exists while the PC still works and that you can reach it from another device. Store an additional copy securely if appropriate, then check that the copy is readable. Do not post the key publicly, send it to a stranger offering repairs or keep its sole copy only on the encrypted drive.
