View emergency access grants a trusted contact read access to the individual vault's items when an approved request completes. Takeover instead lets the contact create a new master password and gain permanent read/write access. Bitwarden says existing two-step login methods are removed during a takeover. The contact is not automatically granted access simply because the invitation was sent; acceptance, owner confirmation and the request workflow matter.
A real-world example
An ill parent wants an adult child to look up an insurance login but does not want their master password replaced. View fits that narrower purpose. A sole proprietor planning for permanent incapacity might consider Takeover with different safeguards.
What to do
Choose the minimum access needed, verify the contact's address, set a waiting period and complete every invitation stage. Revisit the arrangement when family or business roles change.
The distinction that matters
A waiting period is a chance to reject a mistaken or malicious request, not a substitute for trusting the contact. The permission concerns Bitwarden's individual-vault data; organization collections, other devices and legal ownership may follow separate rules. Do not use a live takeover as a casual test. Confirm the contact can sign in to their own Bitwarden account and can receive notifications before relying on the plan. Review emergency access after an address change, death of a contact or relationship change; an outdated contact can be worse than no contact.
