The 3-2-1 idea is a useful starting point: three copies of important data, across two kinds of storage, with one copy away from the original location. It is not a magic formula. A cloud sync folder and the same folder on your laptop may both reflect an accidental deletion, so at least one copy needs independent recovery.
Make it concrete
- List what would be difficult to recreate: photos, documents, tax records, password-manager recovery material and app-specific data. Note where each currently lives and who can access it.
- Choose a routine local backup, such as an encrypted external drive, and a separate offsite or trusted cloud backup. Do not leave the only external drive permanently connected if ransomware on the computer could reach it.
- Set a realistic schedule. Daily-changed work files may need daily protection; a photo archive may be copied after each import. Record the most recent successful run rather than relying on a green toggle.
- Pick one ordinary file and one important but non-sensitive sample. Restore them to a separate folder, open them and confirm the contents and dates. Then repeat the test periodically and after changing backup software.
