Build a two-drive Storage Spaces mirror without mistaking it for backup

Storage Spaces can make a virtual drive resilient to one physical drive failure when you choose an appropriate mirror. Microsoft's guidance requires at least two extra drives beyond the Windows disk for a new pool. The setup process consumes the selected disks; it is not a safe way to combine drives that still contain your only files. And mirroring duplicates deletions and ransomware changes, so it is availability protection, not a separate backup.

Before you start

Choose two eligible empty drives and confirm their capacities and connection reliability. Back up anything on them elsewhere and verify it can be restored. Prefer a stable internal connection or reliable enclosure. Record each disk's serial number; Windows may list disks in a different order later. Keep a third independent backup for files you care about.

Do it step by step

  1. Search Start for Storage Spaces and review the available physical disks. Confirm the two intended extra drives are eligible and that neither is the Windows system disk or your only backup.
  2. Create a new storage pool using only the selected empty disks. Read the warning that existing data will be removed. Name the pool so it can be identified during maintenance.
  3. Create a storage space with Two-way mirror rather than Simple if your goal is to tolerate one drive failure. Enter a realistic maximum size; distinguish logical displayed capacity from the actual physical capacity consumed by copies.
  4. Assign a drive letter, choose a supported file system and format as the wizard directs. Copy a small test set, open it from the new virtual drive and record free capacity.
  5. Create an independent backup of that test set to a different device or account. Delete a disposable test file on the mirror and confirm that mirroring did not preserve an older version—this demonstrates why backup is separate.
  6. Document how you will monitor disk health, identify a failed physical disk and add replacement capacity. Do not unplug one disk as a casual test while copying production data.

Check the result

The mirror appears as a usable virtual drive, files open from it, and a separate backup restores a sample. You can identify both physical members without guessing.

If something goes wrong

A USB disk visible in File Explorer may still be ineligible for Storage Spaces. Microsoft says only recognized eligible physical disks are offered. If a disk is missing, inspect compatibility and connection rather than forcing it with a partition-cleaning command.

Know the limit

Two-way mirroring can tolerate a single drive failure under its designed conditions, but it does not prevent deletion, corruption, theft, fire or malware from affecting the files. Keep an independent, preferably offline or versioned backup. Microsoft Storage Spaces

Decision checkpoint

Calculate usable capacity before purchase. A two-way mirror writes redundant copies and therefore provides less usable capacity than the sum of the labels on the drives. It also inherits the connection risk of its enclosure; two disks attached through one unreliable hub are not a complete continuity plan.
