Check an iPhone iCloud backup before changing phones

Seeing photos in iCloud does not prove there is a recent full device backup. Apple separates data that syncs continuously, such as iCloud Photos, from information included in iCloud Backup. Before selling or resetting a phone, check both paths and preserve access to the Apple Account and verification methods.

Pre-migration check​

1. Connect the current iPhone to power and Wi-Fi. In Settings → your name → iCloud → iCloud Backup, confirm the right phone is selected, backups are on and a recent backup finished. Start a manual backup if needed and wait for completion.
2. Review the backup details and important apps. Apple notes that an iCloud device backup covers information not already synchronized to iCloud. Check Photos, Contacts and iCloud Drive separately if they are synced rather than included in the snapshot.
3. Make sure you know the Apple Account sign-in and can receive a verification code after the old phone is unavailable. Transfer or preserve authenticator access and any app-specific recovery codes before wiping anything.
4. Set up the replacement phone, choose the correct backup and verify photos, messages, key apps and settings after restore. Only then erase the old phone through Apple's official handoff procedure.

What this test can and cannot prove​

A recent timestamp shows that backup ran; checking restored items on the new phone shows more. Not every app stores every item in Apple's backup, so check critical apps' own export instructions.
