Check iCloud Private Relay before relying on it while traveling

iCloud Private Relay can limit what Safari browsing reveals to websites and network providers by sending traffic through two relays. It requires an eligible iCloud+ subscription and can be unavailable by region or disabled for a particular network. It is not a blanket VPN for every app.

Before you start​

Check the country you are visiting, your iCloud+ status and whether the network is managed by an employer, school or hotel. Some services may behave differently when an IP address is obscured.

Do it step by step​

1. On the iPhone, open Settings, your name, iCloud, Private Relay, and check that the feature is enabled.
2. For the active Wi-Fi network, open its details and inspect Limit IP Address Tracking. Check cellular options separately if you will use mobile data.
3. Choose whether the IP address should maintain a general location or use country and time zone, according to the service you need.
4. Browse a normal Safari site and confirm it loads. If a specific website breaks, use Apple's temporary per-site option where available rather than turning off the whole feature permanently.
5. Revisit Private Relay after changing networks or countries. If it is unavailable in a region, use normal account and website security precautions rather than assuming it is operating.

Check the result​

The account setting and active network setting should both show the intended state. A website loading successfully is not proof that every network and app uses Private Relay.

If something goes wrong​

A network administrator may restrict the feature, and Apple says it is not available in every country. Changing Wi-Fi tracking settings can affect the same network on other devices sharing the Apple Account.

Know the limit​

Private Relay primarily concerns Safari browsing privacy and selected traffic; it does not hide an account identity you voluntarily provide to a website. Apple's Private Relay settings Apple's Private Relay explanation
