Android can back up device settings, apps and some data to a Google Account, but individual apps may not restore everything. Photos may be handled by Google Photos, while non-Google accounts and some app data follow their own systems. If you can still use the old phone, verify those details before resetting it.
Check the actual backup
- Open Settings → Google services → Backup or the equivalent on your model. Check which Google Account receives the backup, the date of the latest completed run and Backup details. A backup can take time to finish.
- Inspect your most important apps individually: authenticator, messaging, notes, photos and password manager. Find each app's official transfer or export instructions. Do not assume a phone-wide backup includes its secret keys or every chat.
- Check Google Photos or another photo service separately and open several recent pictures. Make sure the backup account can be accessed without the old phone's only MFA method.
- If moving to a new device, restore during setup when offered, then verify contacts, messages, pictures and app sign-ins before wiping the old phone. Google says some transfer options may be unavailable after initial setup.
