Choose a Telegram Secret Chat for a sensitive conversation

Ordinary Telegram Cloud Chats are encrypted between client and server and can sync to your other devices. Secret Chats use end-to-end encryption between the participating devices, are device-specific and do not appear in the Telegram cloud. That distinction matters before sharing sensitive details. A Secret Chat is not a magic disappearing record: the recipient can photograph the screen, and logging out can make your own secret-chat history unavailable.

Before you start​

Agree with the other person on a trusted way to confirm identity, ideally a known in-person or separate channel. Decide whether you need cross-device access or a durable record for a legal or work process; if so, a Secret Chat may be unsuitable. Secure the originating device with a lock, and avoid a rooted or jailbroken environment for high-risk material.

Do it step by step​

1. Open the recipient's Telegram profile, select the menu and Start Secret Chat. Check that the conversation is labeled as a Secret Chat rather than a normal cloud thread with the same name.
2. Compare the encryption-key visualization with the recipient through a trusted channel when the conversation's sensitivity warrants it. A matching image confirms the specific device-to-device chat, not that the person is honest.
3. Explain that the chat will exist only on the devices where it was started. Do not promise a coworker that they can read it later from Telegram Desktop or after replacing their phone.
4. If using a self-destruct timer, set it before the sensitive message and check when the countdown begins. Telegram says a timer is not a bulletproof screenshot prevention system.
5. Send only the minimum necessary detail and avoid identity documents or secrets if the recipient does not truly need them. Reconfirm the recipient if their device or account changes.
6. Before logging out, resetting or selling the originating phone, decide whether needed information has been preserved through an authorized process. Do not assume a cloud restore will bring back the Secret Chat.

Check the result​

Both people can identify the Secret Chat and understand it is device-specific. Key comparison, where appropriate, was done through a trusted channel, and no one relies on the chat as a guaranteed backup or screenshot blocker.

If something goes wrong​

If Start Secret Chat is missing, check the official app and recipient profile rather than installing an unofficial 'secure Telegram' client. If the conversation disappeared after logout, Telegram says secret chats are tied to the originating session; avoid promising recovery. A changed key calls for verification of the active devices.

Know the limit​

End-to-end encryption protects message content in transit and against Telegram's cloud access model, but an unlocked endpoint or recipient can still disclose it.
