Clear enough Windows 11 space for an update without deleting rollback files

A feature update may need working space beyond the final Windows installation because setup stages files and keeps a temporary route back. Microsoft's update guidance notes that extra space can support removal of the update for a limited time. Deleting previous-installation files as the first response may make Go back unavailable exactly when you need it. Identify the space requirement, use low-risk cleanup and treat rollback files as a deliberate choice.

Before you start​

Back up files and record free space, the update version and the exact storage error. Check whether you are still within the rollback period for a recent feature upgrade. If so, do not remove Windows.old or related rollback folders while deciding whether to return to the prior version. Keep AC power and a stable network connection available.
