Clear Google Maps searches without erasing the wrong location record

A past search for a clinic or address can appear in Maps history even if Timeline is off. Conversely, a recorded visit can exist in Timeline even after a search is removed. Google explicitly says deleting Maps history does not remove visits from Timeline, saved lists, reviews or photos. Treat each data type as its own record and choose the control that matches your goal, rather than using Delete all time because an item looks sensitive.

Before you start​

Identify the item: was it a search, a route request, a place visit, a saved label or a public review? Decide whether you need to preserve anything for records. Open Google Maps independently and confirm the correct account. Be aware that Google is rolling out changes to Search Services History, so some labels may differ and Web & App Activity may still govern personalization.

Do it step by step​

1. For a search or map activity item on a computer, open Google Maps, menu, Maps history. Review entries and dates before deleting.
2. Remove only the relevant item using its Remove control, or choose a date range when several related entries should go. Read the Delete today, custom range and all-time options before confirmation.
3. If the item is tied to a specific place, open that place's overview and Your Maps history; check whether deleting that place's activity is more precise.
4. If the record is a physical visit, use the mobile Maps app, profile, Your Timeline and its visit or day controls instead. The current Timeline data is shown on the device, not the desktop Timeline page.
5. Review saved lists, home/work labels, public contributions and photo location metadata separately if the aim is a wider privacy cleanup. Deleting a search does not edit those items.
6. Reopen Maps history and Timeline as relevant to verify the intended result. Review future history and auto-delete settings so the same data is not retained longer than you want.

Check the result​

The chosen search or activity item is absent from Maps history, and any separate Timeline visit, saved list or public contribution has been reviewed under its own control.

If something goes wrong​

If an item persists, confirm the account and whether it is a Maps history item or a Timeline visit. A browser may also retain local history after account activity is deleted. If history settings look different, check Google's current rollout notice and Web & App Activity controls.

Know the limit​

Deleting Maps history is not a universal location erase. Google says Timeline visits, saved lists, labels, reviews, photos and other activity can remain. Likewise, deleting a Timeline visit does not necessarily remove a search you made for that address. Use a data inventory rather than one broad switch.
