Communication Safety warning versus content moderation

What it means

Apple Communication Safety warns a child about potentially sensitive images or videos in supported communication surfaces. It is designed to help the child pause, make a choice and get help. It does not review every app, certify every benign-looking image or identify every abusive person. The family needs a Child Account, supported software and the right Screen Time setting for the feature to operate as described.

A real-world example

A child receives a coercive text in a third-party game chat with no image. No Communication Safety image warning appears. The message can still be harmful and needs an adult response.

What to do

Check the setting for the correct child account, update devices, and explain where to seek help. For an actual incident, use the relevant app's reporting tools, preserve needed evidence safely and contact local help when there is danger.

The distinction that matters

The presence of a warning is not a legal finding about content. The absence of a warning is not permission to continue an unsafe exchange. Screen Time restrictions, parental discussion, app privacy settings and trusted adults address different parts of the risk. A feature that notices some media cannot replace a child's ability to report pressure, requests for money or attempts to move a conversation to another platform. Apple Communication Safety help
