What it means
Gmail confidential mode can make a message inaccessible after an expiration date or a sender's Remove access action. It also disables common forwarding and copy controls. These features govern access to the controlled message, not the recipient's memory or an external photograph.
A real-world example
A recipient reads a confidential message on Monday and photographs the screen. The sender removes access on Tuesday; the controlled message closes, but the photograph remains.
What to do
Use an appropriate expiry, verify the addressee and avoid sending material that would cause serious harm if copied. Remove access promptly if it was sent in error.
The distinction that matters
Expiry is a permission cutoff, not a guaranteed erasure from every device or record. Google explicitly warns that screenshots, photos and malicious software can preserve the content, so high-stakes sharing needs a stronger process. Record the intended recipient and retention period before sending.
