What it means
Controlled folder access protects selected folders from unauthorized changes. Adding an allowed app lets that executable modify protected files, which helps a trusted program save work but also expands what it could do if compromised.
A real-world example
A photo editor cannot save to Pictures and appears in a block notification. The user checks its installed path and publisher before allowing the real executable; a same-named file in Downloads is not assumed equivalent.
What to do
Review the path in Windows Security, confirm the program through its official installation route and allow only what is necessary. Remove old entries during periodic review.
The distinction that matters
This is separate from a Defender Antivirus scan exclusion: one controls writes to protected folders, the other changes what the scanner examines. Microsoft documents these controls in different parts of Virus & threat protection. Neither control should be changed merely because a pop-up is inconvenient.
