Decide whether iPhone Lockdown Mode fits your risk

Lockdown Mode is an extreme optional defense for people who may be targeted by sophisticated cyberattacks. Most people do not need it for ordinary spam or a single phishing email. Its restrictions can break normal web, messaging and sharing features, so use it deliberately.

Before you start​

Document the specific threat and preserve any evidence. Update the iPhone and other Apple devices first; Apple says full protection requires Lockdown Mode on each supported device separately.

Do it step by step​

1. Open Settings → Privacy & Security → Lockdown Mode and read Apple's current description of the restricted features. Consider whether the risk matches the feature's intended use.
2. Choose Turn On Lockdown Mode and follow the restart prompts. Record that the change is intentional so you do not mistake restricted behavior for a new malfunction.
3. After restart, check key communication routes: trusted contacts, work websites and required accessibility or medical workflows. Some content and connection types may behave differently.
4. If a necessary website fails, investigate whether an exception is available in Apple's Lockdown Mode controls. Grant the narrowest exception and do not disable the mode broadly in response to an unsolicited site prompt.
5. Check other supported Apple devices individually. On supported watches paired to the iPhone, the mode may turn on automatically; verify the actual status rather than assuming every device followed.

Check the result​

The mode should show enabled in Privacy & Security and your essential contacts should still be reachable. Keep a record of any exceptions for periodic review.

If something goes wrong​

If the device is managed, consult its administrator before changes that affect work access. If you are facing a credible targeted threat, seek specialized help rather than treating one switch as a complete investigation.

Know the limit​
