Deregister an Amazon device before selling or giving it away

A Kindle, Fire tablet, Fire TV or Echo can stay associated with an Amazon account after a physical handoff. Amazon says deregistering removes the device from the account and disconnects it from digital content and Amazon services. That is an account step, not necessarily a complete local wipe. Before transferring ownership, preserve any content you need, deregister the exact device, then follow its model-specific factory-reset instructions so the next person does not inherit personal settings.

Before you start​

Confirm the device model and its unique name or serial number. If you own several identical devices, rename them temporarily so you do not deregister the wrong one. Back up personal files and photos separately; digital purchases may remain attached to your account even when the old device loses access. Decide whether a trade-in or warranty process has additional requirements.

Do it step by step​

1. Open Amazon's Manage Your Content and Devices from a trusted account session. Go to Devices and locate the exact Kindle, Fire, Alexa-enabled or other supported device.
2. Inspect its details, including registered account and device name. If the item is physically present, compare those details with its settings or label before changing anything.
3. Select Deregister and confirm. Amazon says the device will lose access to the account and purchased content until registered again. Reopen Devices to verify it no longer appears under the intended account.
4. On the device itself, follow Amazon's model-specific reset or erase procedure after any needed backup. A remote deregistration alone may leave local downloads, Wi-Fi details or profile information until the device is wiped.
5. Remove the device from linked services where relevant, such as a smart-home integration, and check whether your account still lists associated accessories or household settings.
6. Only after the device shows a clean setup screen should you pack or hand it over. Keep a record of the serial number and deregistration date until the sale or return is complete.

Check the result​

The correct device is absent from the account's registered-device list and starts at its first-use setup screen. Needed personal files were preserved and the buyer does not see your library or account profile.

If something goes wrong​

If the device still appears, allow sync time and confirm you were in the right account. If you deregistered the wrong device, Amazon says it can be registered again with your credentials, but do not share those credentials with the recipient. A lost device may require account-security review in addition to deregistration.

Know the limit​

Deregistering is not the same as erasing local storage. Factory reset is not a substitute for removing account association.
