Donate after a disaster without paying a lookalike charity

After an earthquake, fire or flood, an urgent post may carry a familiar-sounding charity name and a payment link. A friend sharing the post may also have skipped verification. You can help quickly without letting the original message choose the charity or the account that receives your money.

Before you start​

Decide what cause and location you intend to support. Keep the donation request for comparison, but open a separate browser tab to investigate rather than following its link.

Do it step by step​

1. Search for the organization's full legal name and official site. Compare spelling, address and donation instructions with the request you received.
2. Check an independent charity evaluator or registration record where available. Confirm that the organization is established and can explain its work in that disaster area.
3. Open the official donation page yourself and inspect the recipient before entering payment details. For a text-to-donate request, verify the short code on the charity's site.
4. Prefer a payment method with a record and dispute path. Decline any demand that donations must be cash, gift cards, wire transfer or cryptocurrency.
5. Save the receipt and watch your statement for the intended amount and recipient. Report a lookalike or impersonation through the platform and relevant consumer authority.

Check the result​

Your receipt should identify the organization you researched and the amount you chose. The payment should appear only once on your statement.

If something goes wrong​

A new local group may be legitimate but harder to verify. Ask how funds are distributed and consider an established local relief organization if the evidence remains thin.

Know the limit​

Registration or a polished website alone does not prove the effectiveness of aid. Check governance and how much reaches the stated mission; a direct person-to-person collection has different safeguards. FTC disaster-donation advice
