What it means
Version history shows snapshots of an individual Dropbox file and can make one earlier version current. Rewind can reverse a batch of changes in a folder or account back to a selected point, including edits, renames, additions and deletions. Rewind is intended for widespread incidents; its broader scope can undo legitimate work made after the chosen point.
A real-world example
A single spreadsheet was overwritten at noon. Rolling back that file's version is targeted. After ransomware altered hundreds of files, selecting a precise pre-incident point for a folder Rewind may be more practical, once the infection is contained.
What to do
Inspect the change scope first. For one existing file, preview Version history and preserve the newest valid edits. For many changed files, check plan eligibility, contain malware, review Rewind's timeline and coordinate with collaborators before confirming.
The distinction that matters
Rewind does not undo permanently deleted items, membership changes or changes older than the version-history window. It is unavailable on the mobile app, and team permissions may restrict it. Version history also has plan-specific windows and unsupported file types. Before either operation, write down the last known good time and ask collaborators whether they added valuable material after it. Neither feature replaces an independent backup or malware cleanup.
