eBay checkout versus an off-eBay payment

What it means

An eBay checkout is the platform's order and payment flow tied to a listing and purchase history. An off-eBay payment is money sent through a separate bank transfer, crypto wallet, prepaid card or external website, even if the seller proposed it in eBay Messages. eBay says its Money Back Guarantee requires an eligible purchase paid on eBay; an off-platform arrangement generally falls outside that protection.

A real-world example

A seller offers a lower price if the buyer pays a personal bank account. The buyer can still see the original listing, but the money was not paid for a completed eBay checkout order. An order screenshot does not convert that transfer into a protected transaction.

What to do

Complete the purchase only through eBay's own checkout with an accepted method, or decline. Keep communication in eBay Messages. If money was already sent elsewhere, contact that payment provider immediately and report the seller separately.

The distinction that matters

An on-platform order is not guaranteed refundable: category exclusions, required evidence and deadlines still apply. Off-platform contact is a warning signal, not proof every seller is fraudulent. The important distinction is where the purchase was completed and what policy covers that specific item. Save the checkout receipt. eBay seller-fraud warning Money Back Guarantee policy
