Many marketing emails load remote images to infer when and where a message was opened. Apple's Mail Privacy Protection makes that harder by obscuring an IP address and open activity in Mail. It does not protect what happens when you follow a link or open a document attachment.
Before you start
Use the iPhone's built-in Mail app and check whether the device is managed by an organization. Note your current network settings so you can recognize a policy or network restriction.Do it step by step
- Open Settings, then Apps, then Mail. Select Privacy Protection and turn on Protect Mail Activity.
- Check that Limit IP Address Tracking is enabled for the current Wi-Fi network as Apple requires for the feature. Repeat for other regularly used networks where appropriate.
- Read new mail normally, but inspect unexpected sender requests and link destinations independently before signing in or downloading anything.
- Review related account privacy controls if you also read mail through a third-party app; Mail's setting is not a universal control for all clients.
- Revisit Mail's Privacy Protection setting after device migration or policy changes, and confirm it remains on.
