What it means
A failed update has produced an error and did not complete installation. A pending-restart update may have downloaded and staged successfully but still needs a reboot to finish. Both can leave a notification in Windows Update, so the exact entry in Update history matters.
A real-world example
A user sees a yellow update notice and downloads a repair tool. In fact, Windows had merely requested a restart after applying the package; the extra tool introduced needless risk.
What to do
Open Windows Update and Update history, record the update ID and status, complete a normal restart if requested, then recheck the entry.
The distinction that matters
A successful entry in history is stronger evidence than a disappeared toast, but it is still not a full system audit. Microsoft recommends using the actual failure code when troubleshooting installation errors. Keep the KB number in your notes.
