Filter TikTok comments without accidentally silencing your audience

A public post can attract a burst of impersonation, crypto pitches or abusive replies. TikTok offers separate choices for who may comment, filters for unwanted or keyword-matching comments and, for some accounts, approval of every comment. Turning every filter on without a moderation plan can hide real questions. The aim is to reduce harm while keeping a clear path for legitimate participation.

Before you start​

Identify whether the account is public, private or under 18, because available comment audiences and defaults differ. Decide who will check filtered comments and how quickly. Save evidence of threats or targeted harassment before deleting it, and use platform reporting where appropriate.

Do it step by step​

1. From the account profile, use Menu to reach Settings and privacy, then Privacy and Comments. Read Allow comments from. Choose Everyone, Followers or Friends only where the account type permits, matching the audience you intend to support.
2. Inspect Filter unwanted comments and Creator Care Mode if available. The latter can hide comments TikTok considers inappropriate or previously problematic; it is not a guarantee that all harmful comments disappear.
3. For a recurring scam phrase, enable Filter keywords in comments and add a precise phrase. Avoid single broad words that appear in normal discussion. Keep a short record of why each custom keyword exists.
4. For a specific post receiving abuse, open its Privacy settings and turn comments off if a pause is more appropriate than a permanent account-wide restriction. Check that an older post's setting did not remain more permissive than your current default.
5. Open Review filtered comments and examine a sample. Approve genuine questions, delete spam and report harassment. If Filter all comments is available and enabled, plan to review every queued reply because none appears publicly before approval.
6. Test from a second account if possible and revisit after the next active post. Remove filters that repeatedly catch harmless discussion, and adjust the audience setting if scam accounts continue to reach the comment box.

Check the result​

A normal comment from the intended audience appears or reaches the planned review queue, while a known scam phrase is filtered. The moderation backlog is small enough to handle.

If something goes wrong​

If a control is absent, TikTok says some filters are not available to everyone. Under-18 settings may also restrict choices. If comments still appear, inspect the individual post's Allow comments setting and whether the commenter is in an allowed audience. Do not assume the filter deletes a comment; many controls hide it pending review.

Know the limit​

A filter is a visibility tool, not a judgment of a person's intent. A screenshot of a public comment may survive deletion, and a blocked user can create another account.
