Firefox blocked a download you expected: investigate before keeping it

A browser can block a file because it resembles known malware, unwanted software or an uncommon download. This is a warning, not a full forensic finding. The dangerous shortcut is to disable download protection globally to obtain one file, especially after a search ad or message has sent you to a lookalike site.

Before you start

Record the exact file name, site address and reason shown in Firefox's Downloads panel. Do not run or open the file while deciding what to do.

Do it step by step

  1. Open the Downloads panel and read the warning category. Leave the file blocked while you establish where it came from.
  2. Navigate to the software publisher's official website independently. Compare the product name, release date and download route with what you clicked.
  3. If the file came from a third-party mirror, ad or unexpected email, discard it and obtain a fresh copy from the official publisher.
  4. If the publisher provides a hash or signature, compare it using your operating system's trusted tools. A matching hash verifies that copy against the publisher's stated value, not that the publisher's software is harmless.
  5. Keep Firefox's deceptive-content and dangerous-download protection enabled. If an official download remains blocked, report the apparent false positive through the browser's documented channel and wait for clarification.

Check the result

You should know the publisher, intended file and independent download location before opening anything. The browser's protective settings should still be on.

If something goes wrong

Some legitimate new installers are flagged as uncommon. Ask the publisher for a signed or alternate official distribution rather than relying on a stranger's instruction to bypass the warning.

Know the limit

A clean antivirus scan is not a guarantee of safety. Download reputation, code signing and the user's understanding of what the program does answer different questions. Mozilla's download-protection guidance
