What it means
A Firefox Primary Password protects locally saved website credentials in the desktop browser profile and is requested when Firefox needs them. A Mozilla account password signs you into Sync and other account services. They are separate secrets with separate recovery consequences. Mozilla warns that resetting a forgotten Primary Password removes all saved usernames and passwords from that local store.
A real-world example
A user remembers their Mozilla account password and can sign into Sync, but Firefox still asks for the Primary Password before showing a local login. Entering the account password does not satisfy the local vault prompt.
What to do
Use unique strong values, keep recoverable records outside the Firefox profile and test access before retiring an old device. Lock the operating system too, because website sessions and downloads remain exposed in an unlocked account.
The distinction that matters
A Primary Password does not replace a site password or two-step verification. The Mozilla account's recovery method does not automatically reveal a forgotten local Primary Password. Mobile Firefox storage and prompts differ from desktop behavior. If the only copy of a login lives in one Firefox profile, a reset can leave you dependent on the website's own recovery process; verify that route while you still have access.
