A nearly full C: drive can block security updates and slow ordinary work, but 'delete temp files' is too vague for a machine with downloads, cloud placeholders and a recent Windows upgrade. Windows 11 offers Storage categories and Cleanup recommendations so you can identify the actual consumer before removing anything. The disciplined route is to measure, choose low-risk categories, verify free space and only then touch larger personal files or previous-installation data.
Before you start
Record free space in File Explorer > This PC and the failed update's storage message. Ensure important documents have an independent backup. If you are investigating a crash or malware incident, preserve logs and suspicious files needed for analysis instead of mass-deleting them. Keep Windows.old intact if you still might use Go back to the previous version.Do it step by step
- Open Settings > System > Storage and wait for its category calculation. Note the largest categories and whether the capacity bar is red. Compare C: with any other drive; Storage Sense operates on the system drive, not every volume.
- Open Cleanup recommendations. Review Temporary files, Large or unused files, Files synced to the cloud and Unused apps individually. Read each item's description before selecting it; a proposed file is not proof you no longer need it.
- Start with known disposable items, such as files already in Recycle Bin after you checked them. Clean one section, then recheck free space. Do not select Downloads automatically; it may contain installers or the only copy of documents.
- If cloud-synced files dominate, inspect their sync and offline state. Making a file online-only can release local space while leaving it in the cloud, but it also makes offline access dependent on connectivity and a healthy account.
- If a Windows update still needs space, use Microsoft's update-specific guidance. An external storage device may temporarily help an update, but it is not a substitute for enough reliable internal free space for normal operation.
- After cleanup, restart, retry the affected update and confirm the new free-space figure. Keep a note of what was deleted so you can investigate if an app or file is unexpectedly missing.
