Guest Wi-Fi: a separate name is not enough

What it is

A guest Wi-Fi network gives visitors internet access without sharing the main Wi-Fi password. Many routers can also keep guests away from local computers, printers and cameras, but isolation behavior depends on configuration and model. A second network name alone does not prove the separation works.

Example

You create a guest network for visitors and connect a spare phone. It reaches the web, but can also open a local camera page. That means the network may not be isolated as intended. Check the router's local-network access control and test again. The FTC's home Wi-Fi advice recommends guest access; its camera guide explains why device separation matters.

The limit

Guest Wi-Fi does not patch a router, block phishing or protect a visitor's own phone. Keep the router updated, use current Wi-Fi encryption and rotate the guest password when access should end. If a smart device cannot discover a hub across the network boundary, decide whether to move that device rather than disabling all isolation.
