What it means
With iCloud+, Hide My Email generates a random address that forwards to a chosen personal inbox. The third-party service may treat that relay as the account email for sign-in and password reset. Deactivating it stops forwarding, so a careless cleanup can cut off recovery messages. The real destination address is hidden from that service, but Apple still operates the forwarding layer and the service may know other identity details.
A real-world example
A person uses a relay for a retailer, then turns it off after one marketing email. Months later, the retailer sends a password-reset link to the old relay. No message arrives because forwarding is disabled, even though the account still exists.
What to do
Label relays by service, save each in the related password-manager item and check the Forward To inbox. Before deactivation, update the service's email or close its account when appropriate. Reactivate the exact relay if available and needed.
The distinction that matters
An email relay is not a disposable inbox if it anchors a valuable account. It does not encrypt a message or stop tracking through payment, cookies or shipping information. A mailing-list unsubscribe, an account email change and relay deactivation solve different problems. If the iCloud+ subscription or Apple Account changes, review how you will continue receiving mail for accounts tied to these addresses before making the change.
