Hide your Telegram phone number without losing contact routes

Telegram lets you talk using usernames and groups without displaying your phone number to everyone. By default, people in your address book may see it, and Telegram says someone who already knows and saved your number will still know it. A public username can also make your account discoverable without exposing the number. If spam or harassment starts, review number visibility, who can find you by number, public username and shared groups as separate paths.

Before you start

Use the account and number that receive unwanted contact. Record how the stranger found you if known: direct number, common group, username or a forwarded message. If a contact has your number from outside Telegram, a setting cannot erase that knowledge. Decide whether legitimate contacts need to find you through the phone number or can use a username.

Do it step by step

  1. Open Settings, Privacy and Security, Phone Number. Review who can see the number and who can find you using it; choose the narrowest audience compatible with necessary contacts.
  2. Inspect exceptions, if present. A broad exception can undercut a restrictive default. Recheck contacts who have the number saved already and do not promise that their existing address-book entry vanishes.
  3. Review your public username in account settings. Remove or change it if discoverability is causing abuse; remember that shared groups can still expose your profile to other members.
  4. Review contact-sync settings and whether uploaded contacts should remain. Changing visibility and deleting synced contacts are different operations; read Telegram's data-setting description before deleting anything.
  5. Ask a trusted person who does not have your number saved to inspect the visible profile, if practical. Do not give your number to a stranger simply to test the privacy control.
  6. Block and report abusive accounts in the relevant chat. If a threat includes doxxing or stalking, preserve evidence and seek appropriate local help; privacy settings alone do not resolve an offline safety risk.

Check the result

The phone-number audience matches your intent, the public username and group exposure are understood, and a practical outsider check shows the expected visible profile.

If something goes wrong

If someone still knows your number, ask whether it is saved in their contacts or available elsewhere. If strangers can still message you, look at public username and shared groups. If you change phone numbers, use Telegram's Change Number flow rather than assuming a new SIM silently updates the account.

Know the limit

Hiding the number on a profile does not make an account anonymous. Existing contacts, screenshots, exported lists and external data cannot be recalled. Account discovery and message delivery have more routes than phone-number visibility, so review all exposure paths before claiming a setting solved harassment. Telegram phone-number FAQ
