Two-step verification adds another check when you sign in to a personal Microsoft account. Before you begin, make sure your security information is current: losing access to every verification method can make account recovery difficult.
After setup, sign out and check that you can sign back in. Keep more than one recovery method if Microsoft offers it. This guide is for personal Microsoft accounts; work or school accounts may be managed by an administrator.
Turn it on
- Go to Microsoft account security and sign in.
- Open Manage how I sign in.
- Under Additional security, choose Two-step verification and select Turn on.
- Follow the prompts to add or confirm your verification methods.
