Inspect Windows 11 diagnostic data without disabling security updates

Windows collects required diagnostic data to keep the device secure and serviced; optional data and personalization controls are separate choices. Microsoft offers a Diagnostic Data Viewer, but notes it displays data available while it is running, not a complete historical ledger. The Delete diagnostic data button deletes device diagnostic data, not necessarily account-associated data, and it does not stop future transmission. A useful privacy review avoids claiming one switch makes Windows silent.

Before you start​

Write down whether this is a personal or organization-managed device. Managed telemetry controls may be locked, and IT may retain its own diagnostic copy. Keep Windows Update enabled and do not install 'privacy scripts' that disable security services. If you intend to inspect data, allow disk space for the viewer and use the official Microsoft route.

Do it step by step​

1. Open Settings > Privacy & security > Diagnostics & feedback. Review the current required/optional diagnostic choice, Improve inking and typing, and personalized experiences separately.
2. If you want to inspect collection, turn on View diagnostic data and open Microsoft's Diagnostic Data Viewer. Observe the data while the viewer runs and note categories, but do not assume you are seeing all historical events.
3. Turn off optional collection or tailored experiences if that matches your preference, while leaving required servicing and updates intact. Record any option that policy prevents you from changing.
4. If you choose Delete diagnostic data, read Microsoft's limitation: this acts on device data and neither erases Microsoft-account dashboard data nor stops future diagnostic uploads.
5. Visit the Microsoft privacy dashboard through a fresh direct sign-in to view account-associated data and choose any separate deletion there. Do not use a link in a random email claiming to show your telemetry.
6. Restart and recheck the settings. Run Windows Update and a normal device-health check to ensure a third-party tweak has not interfered with maintenance.

Check the result​

Optional settings match your preference, required maintenance still works, and you understand which device and account data controls are separate.

If something goes wrong​

If a setting reverts, check management policy or an app that changes configuration. The viewer is a live inspection tool, not a historical export. Do not infer the absence of displayed events proves no data was ever collected.

Know the limit​

Decision checkpoint​

For an informed comparison, note whether an event appears in the viewer when you perform a harmless action, then close the viewer. The absence of older events is expected because Microsoft says the viewer is not a historical archive. Keep a record of which settings affect optional data and which affect tailored experiences; otherwise a later feature change is easy to misattribute. If you delete data, wait for the confirmation and check the account dashboard separately rather than assuming a device button cleared a personal-account record.
