What it means
A private Instagram account requires approval before most people can see its posts and follower information. A private message is a conversation delivered to selected accounts or placed in a request queue. Switching the profile to private does not recall a message already sent, remove screenshots, or guarantee that a recipient cannot forward its contents. Account privacy, message-request settings and blocking are separate controls.
A real-world example
Someone makes their profile private after sending a photo to a seller. The seller may still have the chat or a saved copy. The profile switch changes who can discover future posts; it does not retrieve the image from the other person's device.
What to do
Choose profile privacy according to the intended audience, review followers, and separately review message requests and existing chats. Before sharing sensitive information, verify the recipient through another channel. If a chat becomes abusive, preserve evidence where needed, then report, restrict or block the account.
The distinction that matters
Deleting or unsending a message can remove it from the chat view under Instagram's rules, but Meta warns the recipient may already have seen it and a reported conversation may retain context. 'Private' describes access inside the service, not a guarantee against screenshots, notifications or an authorized recipient sharing information elsewhere.
