What it means
Lost Mode is a Find My action for a missing iPhone. It locks the device and can show a contact message. Activation Lock is an ownership barrier tied to Find My that makes it harder for someone else to reactivate and use a lost or erased iPhone without the owner's Apple Account credentials.
A real-world example
A finder sees your Lost Mode message and can contact you. If a thief erases the iPhone, Activation Lock still requires your credentials to reactivate it. Neither feature guarantees you will recover the phone or that every old session is closed.
What to do
Enable Find My before a loss, use Lost Mode promptly if one occurs and keep the missing device on your Apple Account while recovery is ongoing. Review sensitive accounts separately.
