What it means
An eligible adult can leave an Apple Family Sharing group while keeping their Apple Account. They immediately lose access to eligible purchases and subscriptions shared by others. Deleting an Apple Account is a far more consequential account-level action. An organizer cannot simply leave and hand over the role; children and teens may have age- and region-specific transfer or parental-control requirements.
A real-world example
A family is reorganized after a move. An adult leaves the old group after securing their own iCloud storage. A child's account is transferred through Apple's family process instead of being deleted to make the organizer's screen look tidy.
What to do
Inventory shared apps, subscriptions, photos and location first. Use Settings, Family, the member name and the appropriate Leave or Remove action. For a young child, follow Apple's transfer instructions and coordinate the new organizer.
The distinction that matters
Removing a member does not retract photos or messages already copied by others, and it may immediately interrupt paid storage or content. The family organizer's payment method and child approvals need separate attention. Regional age thresholds can differ, so do not use a fixed age from a forum post as an eligibility rule. Check the actual device's guidance before acting, and retain your own data and receipts.
