Joining a useful Discord server can also open a path for strangers who share that server to message you. Discord says shared-server members can send DMs by default. Its Content & Social controls let you turn off direct messages from non-friends globally or for selected servers, and you can tune friend requests separately. A careful change reduces unsolicited contact without blocking people you deliberately added as friends or removing you from the server.
Before you start
Decide which conversations must stay reachable: friends, volunteer moderators, support contacts or a game group. Move an important one-off contact to a genuine friend connection only if you trust the person. Know that turning off DMs is a contact-control decision, not a way to erase already received messages or a substitute for reporting harassment.Do it step by step
- On desktop or browser, open User Settings, Content & Social, then Social permissions. On mobile, open your profile, Settings, Content & Social and the Server Settings area. Menu names can shift with app updates, so follow the current Direct messages control.
- Check the current Direct messages setting for shared servers. If you want to stop non-friend server DMs broadly, turn it off and read Discord's prompt about applying it to existing servers. Choose deliberately rather than assuming it affects only new servers.
- If just one server is noisy, use the per-server Social permissions or privacy setting instead. Select that exact server and change only its DM permission, preserving the rest of your communities.
- Review Content & Social friend-request options separately. Limiting DMs does not necessarily stop friend requests, and accepting a stranger as a friend changes who can contact you. Keep request paths open only when useful.
- Test with a trusted non-friend in the affected server if possible, or ask a moderator what the server's normal contact workflow is. Confirm an existing friend can still DM you. Do not use a real harasser as a test contact.
- For an abusive account, use Block and Report in addition to the server setting. Preserve message evidence before cleaning up. For urgent threats, follow local emergency and platform reporting channels.
