The difference
A map pin or address tells someone where a selected place is. Live location sharing lets a recipient see updated device location for a period or until you stop it. In Google Maps, recipients may also see battery status, and some can set arrival or departure notifications. These are different privacy commitments even if both start in the same Maps app.
A decision example
Meeting a friend at a cafe may only require the cafe address. If you share live location “until you turn it off” to solve a one-hour coordination problem, the recipient can potentially keep seeing later movements until you revoke the share. When temporary sharing is truly useful, choose a suitable duration and review active recipients afterward.
The practical limit
Stopping a live share prevents the service from sending more updates through that permission, but the recipient can retain what they already observed. Google's
Location Sharing explanation lists what recipients see and how to stop sharing. Also check other family-safety or messaging apps separately; closing Maps does not necessarily end an active share.
