Lock a lost Mac with Find My, then secure the accounts

If a Mac disappears, Find My can help locate and lock it if Find My was enabled beforehand. A location dot is not a safe invitation to confront a suspected thief. The goal is to protect data, retain recovery options and document the loss.

Before you start​

From another trusted Apple device, sign in to Find My with your own Apple Account. If this is a work Mac, alert its administrator immediately as well.

Do it step by step​

1. Open Find My → Devices and select the missing Mac. Check the last known location and time, recognizing that a stale dot is not the Mac's present position.
2. Choose the lost-device action and follow the on-screen lock instructions. Apple may ask for a numeric passcode for the Mac that differs from its normal login password; record it securely.
3. Add a contact message that does not expose your home address or sensitive account details. If the device appears in an unsafe location, report it to local authorities rather than going there.
4. From a trusted device, review the Apple Account's device list and recent account security alerts. Change any credentials you suspect were exposed on the Mac, starting with email and password-manager access.
5. Check FileVault and backup status using records you already have. If you consider remote erase, understand that it is difficult to reverse and may affect future locating; make that decision only after checking your backup and recovery needs.

Check the result​

Find My should show the Mac's lock status or a pending action if it is offline. Save the device serial number, last seen information and report reference for any insurance or support process.

If something goes wrong​

If Find My was never enabled, remote lock cannot be turned on retrospectively. Focus on account sessions, work access and backups. A missing Mac on a shared family account also requires the correct device selection.

Know the limit​
