What it means
Maps history can contain searches and interactions with places. Timeline records inferred visits and routes on the device when the feature is enabled. Google explicitly says deleting Maps history does not remove Timeline visits, saved lists, reviews or photos. A person can also search for a location they never visited, or visit a place without first searching for it. The right deletion control depends on which record exists.
A real-world example
Someone searches a pharmacy, then travels there. Removing the Maps search entry leaves the visit in Timeline; deleting the Timeline visit leaves the search if it was not separately removed.
What to do
Inspect Maps history from the account for searches and map interactions. Use the mobile Your Timeline for visits. Review saved lists and public contributions separately when the goal is broader privacy cleanup.
The distinction that matters
An item absent from desktop Maps history can still exist in local browser history or another Google activity setting. Timeline itself can be inaccurate in dense places, so correct a wrong venue before relying on it as evidence. Google's search-service controls are changing; check the current account settings rather than assuming an old menu label still applies. A saved place label is another separate item with its own removal control.
