What emergency access is
Some password managers let an account holder nominate a trusted contact in advance. In Bitwarden, the contact can request emergency access and the owner can approve or reject it before a configured waiting period expires. The selected scope changes the risk: View allows reading individual-vault items; Takeover lets the contact replace the master password.
A realistic choice
A family member may need a utility account password if you are unavailable, but not permanent control of every login. View may fit that situation better than Takeover. A business should normally use organizational recovery and role controls rather than a personal emergency contact for employee offboarding. Discuss what an emergency means before granting either option.
The boundary
Bitwarden says Takeover removes two-step methods when the new master password is set. View still reveals sensitive vault contents once granted. Its
emergency-access documentation explains eligibility, scopes and the wait period. Review the contact when relationships change, and keep other recovery material available; the feature depends on the contact's own account remaining accessible.
