What it means
A PayPal automatic-payment agreement authorizes a specific merchant to charge through PayPal under the agreed terms. It may be shown as a subscription, recurring payment or saved business. Canceling that agreement stops the PayPal route for future charges. The merchant's service subscription or contract is a separate relationship, so its cancellation may require a second action on the merchant's site. A merchant-specific backup funding method can also differ from the general wallet preference.
A real-world example
A streaming service continues to bill after a card was removed from a PayPal wallet because its agreement still has another funding source. Removing PayPal from the merchant later prevents that route, but the streaming plan remains active until the merchant confirms cancellation.
What to do
Review Settings, Payments, Subscriptions and saved businesses or Automatic Payments. Select the exact merchant, cancel the PayPal agreement if intended, and separately request service cancellation from the merchant. Keep both confirmations.
The distinction that matters
An old charge is not reversed by canceling future payments. A contract may still create an obligation even when PayPal billing stops. If the merchant charges after cancellation, inspect the agreement status and use the proper billing-issue route. Do not cancel an essential service's payment method before planning continuity. The PayPal interface may use different labels by region and device; follow the merchant entry actually associated with the charge.
